Although dark skies loomed and the air was humid, somehow the rain held off, and by 3:00 p.m. there were blue skies–a tennis miracle! The morning began with the NJO tournament. The draw for this event is huge–over 260 young competitors all vying for a coveted spot at the Fischer Junior Nationals to be held in Ontario in August. This category is open to all participants in the U12, U14 and U16 age divisions.
The young competitors hit the courts at 8:00 a.m. and played on 17 courts for four hours of play and then a further four hours on just 14 courts. Thankfully, this event is back on schedule after the rain of the past few days. Check back later for updates on all the NJO action.
At 1:00 p.m., the Open, presented by Tennis Canada, got under way with the main draws of the Men’s and Women’s Open singles events. It was a big-tournament atmosphere as the stands filled up with spectators. Past champions were on hand to cheer on the players–this is shaping up to be a great showcase event.
The NTRP picked up the play at 5:00 p.m., with 3.0 and 4.0 Men’s and Women’s Singles, as well as 2.5 3.5 and 4.5 doubles. This event is still slightly behind schedule, but with a few more nice days, fingers crossed, we should be back on time. The day that began with dark-grey skies, ended with a beautiful sunset.
