It’s simplistic to day it’s been another great day at the Stanley Park Open, but that’s exactly what it’s been. Players, spectators and organizers couldn’t ask for more–blue skies, a buzzing beer garden, great competitive play and enthralled fans–it’s as near perfect as it gets!
Play began today with a 9:30 a.m. start for the NJO quarters and then semis. The fighting spirit is alive and well in the hearts of each of these young athletes as they give their all. If you want to see some amazing athleticism and determination, then make sure you’re in the park on Friday morning! Finals for the U12, U14 and U16 NJO starts at 11:00 a.m. and the play promises to deliver drama and excitement in a big way.
The Open presented by Tennis Canada took over the afternoon with the round of 16 in Men’s Singles which provided spectators with some close head-to-head battles while the Women’s Singles quarters were wrapped up as the first of the prize money was handed out. Also on the docket today were the Men’s and Women’s Doubles and Mixed quarter-finals. Whether you like a good head to head battle of attrition in Singles, or the strategy and speed of good Doubles, there was something to thrill every fan.
NTRP took the stage at 5:00 p.m. with match play taking place at Stanley Park, Burnaby Tennis Club and the Tennis BC Richmond Hub–it’s the only category still behind after the rain earlier in the week, but matches are nearly caught up. Very few matches will have to stop for dusk as tournament organizers breathe a sigh of relief!
The Stanley Park Brewing beer garden was in full swing with happy patrons enjoying the sun and the tennis. Everyone in the area is gearing up for the Celebration of Light on Saturday and the park is filled with a convivial holiday feel. Join the fun, get some sun and enjoy the biggest public park tournament in BC!
