The 2022, Leith Wheeler Stanley Park Open is celebrating its 90th year! Friday, July 8 marks the opening of competitive play—check back here daily for updates and results! Or come down in person to cheer on the participants and soak up the atmosphere of North America’s largest grass-roots public-court tennis tournament.
This year’s tournament’s Title Sponsor Leith Wheeler kicked off events on Thursday with their annual Hit and Giggle event for Leith Wheeler staff and their families—and the name says it all!
This annual, fun, social event gives everyone on staff a chance to get out on the courts, have some fun, learn to play and get the courts warmed up! Sponsorship banners and flags are up, score cards are ready to go and the freshly washed, gleaming courts were a sight to behold.
Everyone had a great time on the courts—from beginners to experienced players—with Tennis BC coaches on hand to encourage first-timers and seasoned aficionados alike. New players were introduced to the basics of the game through “Red Ball Tennis” and enjoyed some friendly competition, while the more experienced players honed their skills with coaches, played doubles and some full-court fun games.
Around the World was a favourite game—and it couldn’t have been more fitting as, for the first time, the Leith Wheeler team got the chance to meet with some of the participants of the YMCA tennis initiative for new Canadians. This program is run in partnership with Tennis BC and the YMCA and would not be possible without the generous support of Leith Wheeler. Many touching stories were shared, giving Leith Wheeler employees the chance to see the positive results of the program as they got to know some of the participants. It was a special opportunity for everyone.
After all that tennis, refreshment was required! Everyone headed over to the Stanley Park Brewery for well-deserved appies and locally brewed, Stanley Park Brewery craft beer. What a great way to end the day and to kick off the tournament!
