The courts were jumping today as the NTRP finals wrapped up this morning. The Men’s Open Singles semis were on deck in the a.m. as well as the Men’s Open Doubles quarters and semis. It was a great day to be at the park as Tennis BC and the YMCA’s New Immigrant program joined forces to give anyone who wanted to try the game a chance to get on the courts, play some games, learn some skills, and most importantly, have some fun. All ages and levels took part and a group of folks who had never met before made community connections over the net.
Open action was, once again, providing all the thrills to the gathering crowds. It was a perfect day for catching some rays, hanging out in the beer garden, or chilling in the shade to watch the drama unfold.
As the afternoon wore on, the Women’s Doubles final took centre stage at 2:45 p.m. as Juliet Jia Wen Zhang and sister Wendy Qi Wen Zhang took on Alessia Cau and Zehra Suko. The play was intense from the start with all four players putting on an incredible display of athleticism, determination, grit, power and strategy. Zhang and Zhang prevailed 6-7(6), 6-4, 10-3 in a thrilling match that had the crowd holding their breath on every point.
At 6:00 p.m., after a short respite, the crowds were treated to another battle as Jackson Boone and Henry Ren took on Uday Partap Singh Chahal and Prabhjit Singh Kang. The points were quick and these four competitors put on a powerful display. In the end, Boone and Ren were the winners, 6-2, 6-4.
