July 4-12 Stanley Park Open Recap
By Jenn Lin
For tennis enthusiasts in Vancouver, there’s no better place to be than at Stanley Park this July. With its tall trees, beach breeze, and a community that returns year after year for one of the city’s oldest sporting traditions, the 93rd National Bank Stanley Park Open (NBSPO) is an event you won’t want to miss!
This year the NBSPO runs from July 4th to 20th, with junior matches beginning at 8am and adult matches starting at 1pm onwards in week 2. With more than 1600 players across multiple events spanning all ages, 17 courts in play (six of which are live-streamed via Tennis BC’s YouTube channel), a merchandise booth full of take-home memorabilia, and even an interactive social media contest/jumping station, the NBSPO has something for everyone, online and off.
Opening Ceremony
Kicking things off on July 4th was the Opening Ceremony led by Tournament Director Iverson Guan. Guan was joined by Haleh Alexander, who introduced National Bank as the tournament’s title sponsor for the third consecutive year. During the ceremony, Guan also celebrated Ankora Retaining Wall and Stanley Park Brewing Restaurant for their contributions as Gold and Silver Sponsors, respectively.
Since 2022, National Bank, in partnership with Tennis Canada, has been levelling playing fields in tennis, literally and figuratively. As Ben West of National Bank mentioned on CTV Morning Live, six courts at Stanley Park have been resurfaced through Play Your Court, a $3 million joint initiative that aims to revitalize 100 outdoor public tennis courts across Canada by 2030. During the segment, West also highlighted two female-oriented initiatives, Game. Set. Equity. and Game. Set. Match., both of which seek to raise young girls’ participation in the sport.
NTRP Events
The NTRP events this year saw an unprecedented 1100 entries, which amounts to an impressive 10 percent increase over the previous year. Registrations have continued to grow since 2023, reflecting the vibrant tennis community. With only one rain delay so far, the tournament has been running smoothly, thanks to staff and volunteers working hard to get the schedule back on track.
