Day 15 was still a hot one, but it was a bit less humid and at least there was a pleasant breeze. Once again, there were many different tournaments taking place under the National Bank Stanley Park Open umbrella. Starting at 8:00am, the first of three green ball Rookie Tours took place. These young competitors are often playing in their first tournament, so it important that it is as much fun as possible, giving the kids lots of chances to play matches against different opponents.
Kids are responsible for calling their own lines and keeping score in timed matches that finish after one set is played or half an hour has passed. The young competitors showed great sportsmanship on court and off, congratulating opponents on great shots on the court and great play off the court.
Later on in the day, the NJOS were playing their finals and the Open is heating up as the matches get tighter and tighter as we near finals on the weekend.
On deck for Saturday, Alessia Cau faces Reece Carter in a battle of defending champ versus past champion at 11:00 am , while Henry Ren faces Raul Dobai in one semi final at 2:00pm, while Connor Church faces Luka Vukovic, also at 2:00pm.
In Open doubles action, Viktoria Abanos and Sara Zupanc will take on the winner of Juliet Jia Wen Zhang and Wendy Qi Wen Zhang versus Reece Carter and Alessia Cau at 1:30 pm, while on the men’s side Riaan Dutoit and Avi Shugar will face Dimitrije Vukovic and Luka Vukovic at 4:00pm in the finals.
In the mixed Open doubles, Paul Ratchford and Khristina Blajkevitch will take on Henry Ren and Reece Carter at 6:00pm. It’s going to be an exciting day and the stage is set for the live broadcast tomorrow of the Open finals. NTRP matches also continued, and at 10:00am, Tennis BC and the YMCA are hosting a community day on the courts for new Canadians!
