With rain in the forecast, Tennis BC staff and tournament organizers were hoping for the best! Play started at 8:00 a.m. under heavy, humid skies. The middle Sunday is an important day in the LWSPO tournament calendar as the second round of Men’s Open qualifying got under way. Also on deck, the first round of the NTRP draw was nearing a close as the finals got under way–and thankfully were finished before the looming clouds burst.

Girls’ Singles action from Saturday.

Some play was moved indoors to the North Shore Winter Club for the afternoon, particularly the first rounds for the second NTRP group. Back at Stanley Park, the army of volunteers and officials hauled out the squeegees once again and set to work to get the 17 courts dry and playable–a monumental task with only 8 squeegees. By 4:30 p.m., play had resumed at the park.

Matches are behind, but concessions were made in scoring today in some events, such as playing a ten-point tie breaker to replace the third and deciding set. The Open main draw begins tomorrow as well as the NJO (National Junior Open) for U12, U14 and U16 Boys and Girls in which there are 300 registered competitors. The winner of each draw in this category gets a wild card to Nationals–this is great tennis to watch.
